Yen Magazine – Win Tickets to 12 Years a Slave

Yen Magazine – win 1 of 15 double passes to 12 Years a Slave

12 Years a Slave, directed by the very serious new kid on the block Steve McQueen (Hunger, Shame), details the true story of Solomon Northup’s (Chiwetel Ejiofor) fight for survival and freedom. Northup was born a free black man in pre-Civil War America, where he worked as a farmer and a talented violinist in upstate New York until his life was turned upside down when slave-traders kidnapped him in 1841.

The film follows Northup’s journey from freedom to slavery, a chance meeting with a Canadian abolitionist (Brad Pitt) and his incredible efforts to escape from a life of torture and despair.

Ejiofor gives an incredibly powerful and touching performance that has put him on our radar, and also on the radar of a little organisation called the Academy Awards.

12 Years A Slave releases nationally January 30, 2014.
